High school roundup for Aug. 31, 2024: Moon gets past Avonworth in thriller | Trib HSSN (1)

Luiz Silva scored the game-winning goal to propel Moon to a 4-3 victory over host Avonworth at the ‘Lopes Cup on Saturday.

Marc Haupt, Hayden Dunn and Evan Thomas added a goal each for the Tigers (4-0). Abdul Basit scored twice and Nathan Kline added a goal for the Antelopes (2-1).

Beth-Center 2, Laurel Highlands 2 – Parker Amos and Nekoda Bundy scored for Beth-Center (1-0-1) in a draw with Laurel Highlands (0-1-2) at the Fayette County Coaches Tournament.

Montour 3, Mercyhurst Prep 1 – Brayden Boris had a pair of goals and Evan Bonato also scored for Montour (4-0) in a win over Mercyhurst Prep at the Avonworth Tournament.

Neshannock 3, Mercer 1 – Zayden Herb had a goal and an assist as Neshannock (3-0) beat Mercer in nonsection play. Diego Porras and Caeden Turner added goals.

Woodland Hills 5, Brashear 0 – Simon Mroz had two goals and Jude Fossum, Kevin Agbodoh and Andrew Bingham also scored to lead Woodland Hills (2-1) to a nonsection win over Brashear (0-5).

Girls soccer

Belle Vernon 2, Baldwin 1 – Chessa Mertz scored in the second half and tournament host Belle Vernon (2-2) secured a win over Baldwin (1-2) at the Paul Sasko Memorial Kickoff Classic. Sammy Mincone also scored for the Leopards. Belle Vernon dropped the nightcap, 2-1, to Connellsville (4-0). Abby Russel had a goal in the loss.

Butler 6, Mercyhurst Prep 0 – Cecelia Wolford scored three goals and Lucia Leyland added two as Butler (1-2) shut out Mercyhurst Prep in nonsection play.

Erie Cathedral Prep 2, Avonworth 0 – Olivia Dixon scored both goals as Cathedral Prep beat Avonworth (1-1-1) at the ‘Lopes Cup.

Penn-Trafford 5, North Hills 1 – Five players scored for Penn-Trafford (1-2) in its nonsection win against North Hills (1-2). Goal scorers were Alexis Brown, Lauryn Francis, Gaby Michael, Tori Yurt and Avery Bosack.

Plum 3, Gateway 0 – Gianna Revetta, Emily Grubich and Meghan Stammer scored for Plum (3-0) in its nonsection win against Gateway (1-1). Makenna Anderson and Malayna Smith combined on the shutout.

Mohawk 5, Mercer 2 – Ava Ernst and Ellie Whippo scored two goals each to lead Mohawk (2-1) past Mercer in nonsection play.

Norwin 2, Franklin Regional 0 – Julia Bursick and Siena Ali netted a goal apiece to help Norwin (1-2) earn a nonsection win over Franklin Regional (1-3).

Quaker Valley 5, Keystone Oaks 0 – Annabel Miko scored a pair of goals for Quaker Valley (3-0) in a win over Keystone Oaks (2-1) at the West Allegheny Tournament. Rowan Wallace and June Lukasavage added a goal apiece for the Quakers.

Waynesburg 8, Albert Gallatin 0 – Kolbi Rastoka had three goals and an assist as Waynesburg (2-0) beat host Albert Gallatin (0-2) in its first game at the Fayette County Coaches Tournament. Emily Rafferty added two goals and two assists while Peyton Cowell picked up the shutout.

Waynesburg 7, Uniontown 0 – Kolbi Rastoka had two goals and three assists, giving her five goals and and four assists on the day, as Waynesburg (3-0) shut out Uniontown (1-1) in its second game of the Fayette County Coaches Tournament. Rylei Rastoka had two goals and one assist while Bree Clutter and Emily Rafferty tallied one goal and one assist each. Peyton Cowell notched her second clean sheet of the day.

West Allegheny 6, Eden Christian 0 – Chloe Hard scored two goals for the tournament host in its win over Eden Christian (1-1-1). Kylie Holtz added a goal and an assist for West Allegheny (2-1) while Ally Frueh recorded the shutout.

Girls volleyball

Mt. Lebanon Tournament – North Catholic defeated Pine-Richland, 25-20, in the championship match to claim the title. The Trojanettes topped Hampton, 25-22, in the semifinals in a rematch of last year’s WPIAL 3A title game and West Allegheny, 25-10, in the quarterfinals. Pine-Richland got to the championship match with a 25-12 victory over Mt. Lebanon in the semis and a 25-22 win over Peters Township in the quarters.
