Shazam! Fury of the Gods is better than I could have ever anticipated. In fact, I loved this sequel (our review drops Wednesday). It helps that David F. Sandberg has the ability to balance action and comedy, with a bit of horror inspiration. And it’s also fantastic to see Meagan Good, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, and DJ Cotrona bring the charm. And Grace Caroline Currey is a delight as young and “superhero” Mary. Add to that the talents of Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler, and you have something special.
Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with this incredible group of actors. First up, it’s always great to talk with Jack Dylan Graham, who once again steals the show with his hilariously charming performance. And talking with Grazer and Angel together happened to be a very fine time. The two talked about the relationships in the film, and just how nice Asher’s suit was. It was a very nice suit. These two fellas are incredible engaging, and it was a real joy speaking with them.
As for Zachary Levi, I’ve always appreciated talking with this very funny man. And it was terrific catching up on Shazam’s latest adventures, and what this journey has been like for Mr. Levi. We also spoke with the terrific Grace Caroline Currey, DJ Cotrona, and Ross Butler, and it was yet another really fun interview. And speaking of fun, both Meagan Good and Adam Brody were terrific, both in the film and in the interview. The two talked about what they learned from their younger counterparts. The energy that this group of actors brought to the press day made for a terrific day of in-person interviews – slowly but surely, they are returning.
Finishing up, I had a terrific conversation with both Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler. The two opened up about playing two of the three Daughters of Atlas. And of course, what it was like working with the legendary Helen Mirren. Not only was the cast excited to talk about the new film, they also happen to create an impressive ensemble in Sandberg’s exciting return to Shazam! Check out Fury of the Gods this Friday at a theatre near you.
“In the course of basically one week, I ended up going from auditioning for this whole other role to them saying, 'Hey, we think you're our Shazam,'” Levi recalled. So, finding himself in a better place due to his therapy, Levi flew to Los Angeles, did a second audition and in one week was offered the role of Shazam.
Fury of the Gods” takes place after “Black Adam” and the multiverse-traversing “The Flash” takes place all over the place — but is chronologically set around the same time as “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.”
Shazam feels that he has truly found his successor in the upstanding Batson, but before he can act on this, a possessed Theo Adam murders Batson and his wife Marilyn for the magic amulet. He therefore decides to enlist C.C. Batson's young son, Billy, as the successor to his power.
After witnessing all the good Billy had done in his life, the Wizard bestowed his power upon him. With a word, he could transform into the champion, Shazam, and wield the Living Lightning. After granting Billy all of his power, the Wizard died.
This means that only a sliver of actors will be reprising their roles from the previous franchise. Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam is not returning, nor is Zachary Levi's Billy Batson/Shazam. However, this doesn't mean Black Adam will never fight the World's Mightiest Mortal on the big screen.
Like Captain Marvel/Shazam, Black Adam possesses the ability to undergo a transformation by uttering the word "SHAZAM." Through this transformation, he gains the powers and attributes of six divine entities.
A recent report suggested that Dwayne Johnson 'kneecapped' Shazam 2 by refusing to allow Black Adam co-stars to appear in the film for a cameo, and declined to participate himself. Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and Zachary Levi as Shazam, respectively.
After spending a decade in prison, C.C. returns to Philadelphia to find Billy at the Vazquezes' foster home. When he is attacked by Black Adam and the Seven Deadly Sins, Billy shares his Shazam powers with his father, making him the prophesied seventh and final member of the Shazam Family.
sequel have revealed that a returning character will be depicted as gay. In an interview with Dorkaholics, Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan confirmed that the sexuality of Pedro Peña – the older foster brother of the title character – will be explored further in the sequel, subtitled Fury of the Gods.
Mary Bromfield is Mary Marvel. She became one of the Seven Champions of Magic and a member of the Shazam Family along with the Vasquez foster family after her adoptive brother Billy Batson gave her superpowers. Mary later became the new champion of Shazam and was given the full power of the Shazam family.
Shazam could be defeated by being blasted a high amount of Lightning which essentially turns him into Billy Batson. The firepower Zeus has. ( That's from the Crossover, between Marvel and Dc in which he fought Thor. It's non-canon but ever since that high amount of lightning easily turns Shazam into Billy.)
Billy Batson, AKA Shazam himself, dominated our poll, getting 82% of the vote by the time we spoke to the cast. That's probably not too shocking though, considering he's the title character. So really, the big race was to see who fans felt could end up as the second most powerful member of the family after Billy.
Fury of the Gods' first post-credits scene featured Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee's John Economos recruiting Shazam for the Justice Society. The two Peacemaker characters were acting on orders from their boss, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller.
Getting a hold of the wizard's staff, Billy and his foster family, yell the wizard's name, and transfer his power to his family, transforming them into the Shazam family, each an adult superhero. Sivana pursues Shazam and his siblings to a winter carnival, unleashing the Seven Deadly Sins upon the crowd.
Before David F. Sandberg discovered Zachary Levi, Jake McDorman did a screen test for the role of Shazam. McDorman is best known for playing the lead role in the TV adaptation of the Bradley Cooper movie Limitless.
The “Fury of the Gods” post-credits scene finds Shazam being recruited to join the Justice Society, a group of heroes introduced in Johnson's “Black Adam.” In the film, it's Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) from Gunn's “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” who appear to recruit Shazam, ...
