The Sea Women of South Korea: #Haenyeo (해녀)The story behind the Haenyeo – or sea women – of #Jeju Island, in #SouthKorea, who have harvested the ocean since the 17thcentury, is a fascinating one of motherhood and tradition.Without using oxygen masks, Haenyeo women – who are mostly over 60, with some in their 80s – hold their breath underwater until 10 meters in order to harvest horned conch, abalone, octopus and more, by hand. Before a dive, prayers are said to the Jamsugut, goddess of the sea, to ask for safety and an abundant catch. They understand and respect the #ocean. In fact, to protect the ecosystem, Haenyeo take only what they need – a practice we could all learn from, considering that #overfishing is one of the biggest threats to our oceans. 🌊 The Haenyeo are also considered to be South Korea’s first working mothers, breaking societal norms in order to be the breadwinners for their families. Since old times, Jeju has often been called Samda-do, a nickname associated with the three most abundant things on the island: wind, rock, and women. Unlike other places, when men are the breadwinner, women are the lead on Jeju Island. They have to take care of themselves, support their family with jobs such as fishing, farming, raising animals. Sadly, the #tradition is at risk of dying out, particularly as many of the Haenyeo’s daughters have decided to take jobs in cities, instead of diving for a living. While there were an estimated 26,000 female divers on Jeju Island in the ‘60s, the figure is now about 4,500. In 2016, #UNESCO inscribed the Haenyeo onto its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage to emphasize the importance of preserving the #culture.Seeing a unique part of Jeju’s cultural heritage at Seongsan Ilchubong in action was an emotional experience, but it’s important to understand that it’s not for entertainment. These women are going about their normal jobs so are not there to interact. Although there are many tourists visiting their “show”, treat these women with a lot of respect: usually they are not keen on being photographed or interviewed, they just do their job with pride. The mixture of continuing a dying culture and sharing it with the world in a way that does not look like a human zoo experience makes it really interesting, and you can usually buy a plate of the freshest seafood after the catch! 🐙

For today's Motivational Monday, I bring you the Indigenous Rarámuri Women.Wearing traditional huaraches and sandals, six indigenous women from the Rarámuri community of Chihuahua ran in relays approximately 340 miles between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The six Rarámuri women completed “The Speed Project” marathon in 52 hours and 22 minutes in Las Vegas. The race, which is by invitation only, starts at the Santa Monica Pier and ends at the Las Vegas welcome sign.Veronica Palma, Ulisa Fuentes, Lucia Nava, Rosa Parra, Argelia Orpinel, and Lucia Nava took third place in the marathon. Each runner completed 35 miles without stopping, day and night.Lucia Nava, in particular, ran the marathon relay just three months after giving birth. The six Rarámuri women answered the invitation and came down from the mountains of ChihuahuaNative to northern Mexico, in the state of Chihuahua, the Rarámuri settled 15,000 years ago in the western Sierra Madre. Since colonial times, they have used the protection of the mountains to preserve their culture and traditions, including running. This tradition stems from the surrounding ecologically harsh environment. However, for hundreds of years, Rarámuri men and women have competed in uninterrupted day and night running distances of more than 200 km.So what are you waiting for? Either you run the day or the day runs you. #genius #geniusiscommon #whatisyourwhy #leadership #diversity #belonging #positiveintelligence #MotivationalMonday https://wix.to/zRW9tG3

How can one encapsulate 4,000 years of rich history within a logo? Well, WE can! Larnaka, the oldest city in Cyprus, embodies a tapestry of individuals from diverse nationalities, religions, and class backgrounds. This new logo reflects the rich cultural heritage and profound history of Larnaka, evolving into a sustainable, people-centric, and family-friendly city. Equipped with vitality, talent, inspiration, and curiosity, Larnaka positions itself to address modern challenges.Guided by these pillars, we've created a logo for Larnaka 2023, a candidate city for the European Capital of Culture! It represents a mosaic of elements and colors, bearing multiple symbolic meanings that echo the six pillars of Larnaka 2023: Multicultural, Creative, Family-friendly, Human, Sustainable, Curious and Talented.#DeLeMaMcCann #Larnaka2023 #EuropeanCapitalCity #logodesign

Have you ever thought of a water expedition? And not a regular sailing one, but a combination of culture, science and media journey. This is how Circumeuropa was born. 15 years ago, Cristian Ilea started to imagine how would it be to link Timișoara to Nordic Sea, all on water. And he also started to wish showing that Bega is a viable connection of Romania (in general) and Timișoara (in particular) with the rest of Europe. Circumeuropa had started this year, in May. The first stage covered more than 1600 marine miles, from Timișoara to Lefkada, passing Bosfor- Dardanele Strait and Corfu Channel. From a scientific standpoint, we collected 20 water samples so far and we currently analyze them, willing to show the quality of our waters and how this is influencing the life quality. We are water, and the planet is more than 70% water too.Last, but not least, we took the chance of having the epicenter of European culture in Timișoara in 2023. And instead of waiting for the visitors to come and enjoy the reach cultural heritage we have, we took the culture out of the city and put it in the same sailing expedition. We had 4 cultural events in 2 months (in Timișoara, Istanbul, Elefsina and Patras) and we aim to extend this approach. Our journey just started. We hope to have you onboarded in it, to be able to share with you what was great and what we learned in the first stage. As there will be a second one, next year. More culture, extensive research, better visibility over our work and Romanian contribution to the environmental awareness. #circumeuropa #awareness #environment #leadthechange #Timișoara2023 #europeanculturecapital #nextstepstofollow
